SWEEPA Newsletter December 2018

Welcome to the last edition of The Sweepa for 2018 which endeavours to provide members with a brief look at what is happening in the Shed.

COMMITTEE MEETING

At the last committee meeting several items of interest to Shed members were discussed.

These included:

  • Possible fundraising BBQ at the Bunnings Store in Morley. Members are asked to give a few hours of their time to allow the Shed to continue to grow and keep our equipment and resources at a standard that you expect.

Please contact Fergus Beer on 0408 429 576 or fbeer55@gmail.com if you can help for some time on Tuesday 1st January 2019, between 0700 and 1600. (Yes, New Year’s Day!!)

  • Display at the annual Hyde Park Festival on 3rd and 4th March
  • Discussion on office bearer’s positions for 2019/2020 due to some committee members retiring
  • Revise and commit to a stronger “Induction Policy and Procedure” due to insurance requirements
  • Delivery of “snowmen and vinyl booths” to Children’s Hospital by Wednesday 9th December
  • Promotion of a “Kids Day” at the Shed – microbat nesting box building
  • Possible Greg Millar Timbecon presentation in March
  • Sausage sizzle Thursday 17th January 2019
  • New constitution to be reviewed by committee
  • Garage sale to be held Sunday 17th February 2019
  • Ross Boulter to arrange for guest speakers
  • As part of clean up mark corridor through Shed for members to evacuate if necessary.

THE SHED

All members are advised that the Shed will close on Tuesday 18th December and not open again until Monday 14th January.

On Thursday 20th December members are asked to give a few hours of their time to assist with a general cleanup of the Shed. As part of a thank you to those members who assist at the cleanup, the Committee will be providing sausage rolls for morning tea.

As a reminder all members are requested to remove any projects or timber that they wish to use in future. The Shed will not be held responsible if your project or timber is not in the Shed in 2019.

Committee members have raised concerns that the Shed is being used as a storage area and this has meant that space – including workbenches – is at a premium.

November 2018 Committee Meeting

At the recent committee meeting items for discussion included:

  • Garage sale at Shed – sell excess Shed items or members items on commission. Further details at later time.
  • Discussion points raised at MSWA Conference held at Cannington Men’s Shed – included guest speakers, more Shed emphasis on induction, safety, wearing of PPE, insurance cover requirements (must be signed in to get insurance), additional training and supervision (mentoring) of Shed members working in the Shed.
  • Christmas wind up on Saturday December 1st
  • Shed closing for Christmas beak from 18th December with re-opening on 14 January 2019.
  • Renew initiative to seek approval from City of Vincent to extend our space allocation on Woodville Reserve.
  • Improve the safety operation and who can operate the recently acquired large Band Saw
  • Proposal to run a ‘kids’ day where members / parents and kids / grandkids make Microbat nesting boxes – early next year.
  • Shed to provide sanding disks / pads etc and for members to pay for use of these items. Payment will be by use of the honesty box – currently the tea money jar.
